Properties
Piperazine has been known for many years as an effective drug in the treatment of gout and urinary tract lithiasis.
It increases the solubility of urate in urine and has low toxicity.
Colchicine provides rapid pain relief in acute attacks of gout, and the drug is specific for this condition, so it can be used as a diagnostic agent for gout and gouty arthritis. Colchicin has anti-inflammatory properties. While it is very effective in treating acute gouty arthritis,
it is not effective in other types of pain. It is not an analgesic and does not affect uric acid clearance. Instead, colchicine binds to proteins in the microtubules of neutrophils. This binding, in turn, inhibits the migration of neutrophils to the area of inflammation, thereby inhibiting the inflammatory response to urate crystal deposition.
Atropine sulfate is added to relieve urinary tract spasm.
